Before the 2016 election, North Dakota declared that tribal IDs were valid for voting in the state. Thousands of Native Americans are not allowed to vote because they can't get a state ID because reservations don't have addresses. They get all their mail through the post office that is on the reservation. Most people think it is retaliation for the pipeline protests.

My white son got caught in the miasma of identity card replacement in Mississippi. It was an insane nightmare!! He had lived in Mississippi, then moved to Hawaii, then lost all his ID. He literally was told he couldn't get his drivers' license without his birth certificate or his birth certificate without his drivers' license. It was the most ridiculous, insane instance of bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake that I'd seen in many years. Luckily for my son, he was born in Maryland and we could navigate around the ridiculous roadblocks. I kept asking "What do people do who are born in Mississippi?" The officials I spoke to didn't have an answer to that! Seriously! This happened in 2017!

All America has to do is assign everyone a voter ID number which would be the equivalent of a social security number for all eligible voters. But the big little secret is Washington doesn't want everyone to vote. Democrats and Republicans alike like things the way they are. They can better control us that way.

Trump is not in the WH because of voter suppression. He LOST the popular vote. The electoral college who has nothing to do with voters like ourselves decided to vote for him and that is what made him unfortunately the president. I will never understand this dumb argument of he won because people were suppressed or whatever.

In Malaysia, we had very similar problems. The people staged peaceful protests (BERSIH - which means ‘clean’) demanding for FREE and FAIR elections a few years in a row. We were tear-gassed, hosed down with water cannons, the whole works. Finally, this year on May 9, we toppled the corrupt government that had ruled the country for decades. All through the power of the vote. And the power of the people who volunteered to be polling agents throughout the country. And a movement that helped mobilize voters to get to their polling stations. And a persuasive Opposition party (who governs the country now). And much more. Anything can happen when the people band together with a common goal.

Trevor has been raised to hate conservatives. He and many others do not understand conservatism. Many conservatives were not thrilled about Trump getting into office. That said it is worth noting that he ran on a set of core objectives, among which include: Improving trade imbalances. Stopping the flow of illegal immigration and the flow of incoming drugs. Appointing constitutional justices. Improving the economy. Reviving manufacturing. Right-sizing our role and contributions to the UN. To my surprise his actions appear to be consistent with his stated campaign objectives.

doesn't it sound alarming to anyone that blacks/latinos don't vote regularly? the issue is not that they get scrubbed from the registries for that, but that they are not going to vote. although I should note that in my country (and most of europe, afaik) everyone has an ID and is registered in the city they live in (they have to be or don't exist) and are automatically "registered" for voting

Isn't the ID that card thing that comes in the mail when you register to vote?

Vor Monat
Stephanie Cummings
Stephanie Cummings

In Massachusetts, you don't need an ID to vote or to register to vote. You do need a social security number, though, if you don't have a state-issued ID. To remain active on the voters list, you need to answer the annual census and/or vote at the local, state, or federal elections. If you don't do either of those, you become inactive and have to show ID when you vote. They keep the you in the system for two presidential election cycles, so that's eight years you have to do SOMETHING. And if you can't make it to the polls, you can vote absentee by getting a ballot mailed to you. If you're oversees, they cam email you a ballot, too. And recently they added early voting for federal and state elections where you can show up to vote as if it were a regular Election Day. There's almost no excuse not to be able to vote.

Vor Monat
Aubrey Mackenzie
Aubrey Mackenzie

+Stephanie Cummings in South Africa the system is maintained at a national level, by the Independent Electral Commission (IEC), which has the task of maintaining and updating the voter's register on a continuous basis. They run the local, regional and national elections, including bye elections. People are eligible to vote at 18 years old and remain on the voter's roll till death. All South African citizens (even the naturalised), including prisoners and diaspora are allowed to vote.

Vor Monat
Stephanie Cummings
Stephanie Cummings

They did (this year I think) start automatic voter registration at the RMV, whereas before it was only an option. Clerks have to manually take deceased people off the rolls once they get the death certificate in. I don't think Massachusetts is really behind in the elections division, but there is still so much we can change. Our secretary of state is up for reelection, and I know there was at least one other contender with new ideas to improve the system, but we'll see where things go after the midterms.

Vor Monat
Aubrey Mackenzie
Aubrey Mackenzie

Why not have people eligible to vote put automatically on the voters roll and removed automatically on death. You have one national voters roles (storing regional and local attributes). Your regional and local voters register attributes are derived from the last address presented, when you move you present your new address (this presentation of attributes can be done continuously, at any time of the year). You become a registered voter for life regardless of your previous voting activities.

Im a Republican Its funny how they talk about how evil Republicans are yet they talk to other Democrats to repeat it to themself so later on they can say its a fact, how about talking to a Republican. Also driving is a privilege not a right, also voting was also a privilege but it became a right, if you are not a US citizen you are not allowed to get involved in American politics period. In my opinion they should be more restrictions like taking a mini test in which people must get 7/10 questions right to vote, if you dont know what the stripes on the American flag mean you probably shouldn't vote. And if you disagree then why do we have regulations on guns, isnt that a right to keep and bear arms? Oh politics also kills people or at least oppresses others. Just saying if you plan to attack the straw man.

I don't get this whole ID thing. Don't everyone have one, for things like buying alcohol? How else do you ID yourself when you vote? I don't get the US system at all, but I would assume having an ID would be pretty standard? Or at the very least a passport. And this purging/signing up thing. I don't get that either. Don't the state keep track of its own citizens? With a social security number or some such? Why would moving make it harder, don't they know where people move anyway? When I voted my first time I just got the voting card in the mail, I went to the place where I was registered, showed my ID, they checked me off of the list, I voted and that was it. No signing up, no nothing. My country have my information so when I was old enough I was automatically counted as a voter, and I just had to go do the voting, and this have been the same regardless of how much I've moved, and would be even if I were to move abroad. So I don't get this at all. What kind of system does the US even use?

Even for citizens of other European Member States, that are allowed to vote on local elections in the area of their residence, is easy. That is why lefties of all stripes must vote in every single election, especially the ones where local officials are chosen. If our votes really mattered why is it we were not able to vote on the decision to dismiss Kavanaugh from the Supreme Court nomination? Because that decision made by senators set a dangerous prescience in American society. Women will now have to fear going to high school and college parties, they may even fear attending a university, they will eventually fear the work place. It is the freedom and safety that draws millions of people to the country everyday. What will be the repercussions of not being heard, of not feeling safe? If it is something that effects us all why shouldn't we vote on it instead of allowing that decision to be made for us? This is why I can't possibly believe everyone's vote counts, because clearly it doesn't matter in the slightest.

Conservatives have always suppressed the vote. After Reagan they have just cramped it to 11. You have never had a fair election in the US. Until every person who wants to of every color can vote without standing 6hours in a line, without finding out they have been purged because their name sorta sounds like a criminal, without having to beg for a day off of work, without a machine that does the voting for you, without gerrymandering and without the archaic electoral college, then maybe you could have a fair election one day. Let's try to Fact-Check 8:40 "In Indiana, you need to have a driver's license to get a birth certificate. But to get a birth certificate, you need a driver's license." [Drivers License] http://www.in.gov/bmv/2440.htm You need one document to prove your identity when applying for a new driver's license, permit or identification card. The most common documents that you can use to prove your identity are a United States birth certificate (must be an original or certified copy filed with a U.S. state or territory office of vital statistics or equivalent agency in your state of birth), a United States passport or a foreign passport with a visa and I-94 form. Puerto Rican-born citizens must provide a birth certificate issued on or after July 1, 2010. [Birth Certificate] http://www.in.gov/isdh/26792.htm IDENTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS All requests require proper identification, proof of relationship, or direct interest to the person named on the record. Requests sent without proper identification or documentation will be returned without being processed. Accepted Primary Documents (One Form of Identification): - Government Issued Driver’s License / State ID – address listed must match shipping address - Military ID - Passport - Department of Correction ID – issued within past 6 months - School ID – must be currently enrolled - Work ID – must be currently employed - Veterans ID - Green Mexico Consular ID [Conclusion] True in some case, i.e. a circular dependency indeed. "Might" not be true if you contact the Local-Health-Department for a copy of your birth certificate (http://www.in.gov/isdh/26757.htm)

I lived in a part of my city that had very few registered voters, but a whole lot of illegals. I would go to my polling place on my way to work, and the same little old poll workers were always there. I never had to show I.D., we greeted each other courteously, I voted, and went on my way. Then state law changed, and we were required to show I.D. I went with driver's license in hand, was greeted by the same little old poll worker, when a woman I'd never seen before stepped up to the table, leaned over and said out loud "Make sure you check her I.D." He leaned back in his chair, looked up at her, and stated clearly that "Miz Cass has been a most faithful voter, and considering she's the only woman in the group of 5 who vote regularly, we're pretty certain she is who she is". Before the woman could respond, I said, "I don't mind showing my I.D. I came prepared. But, I don't want to be the ONLY person asked for I.D." With eyes wide open, staring at me, she backed away and went and sat down with another woman I'd also never seen at that particular polling place before. We both watched her, then looked at each other. "Thank you, Miz Cass", he said. "Thank you, Mr. ----", I replied. "You have a good day, you hear? he said. I replied, "Thank you sir. You as well." I went to the booth, reviewed the workings with the same old-timer who was also always there, then went on my way to work. Anybody believe that here in the Midwest BS doesn't happen, even when you have I.D.? I have a bridge for sale.
